GHANAIAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY DÜSSELDORF & COLOGNE
Ghanaian community in Dusseldorf and Cologne consists of fellow Christians from Ghana, Togo, Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as other English-speaking African countries.
Many of the community members find it difficult to understand and follow German mass very well because they do not speak the German language fluently. Also the community members do miss the way we do celebrate Mass in Ghana and as a matter of fact in the African countries. We would like to share our culture with our families in the second and third generations.
A CHARITABLE COMMUNITY
GHANAIAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY DÜSSELDORF & COLOGNE
Our
CHARITABLE COMMUNITY LIFE
This creates the charitable help of different fellow Christians on different levels. Here are some examples:
Ghanaian – Deutscher Elternverein Düsseldorf eV “The future of our children and youth”
This association originated from the church. Due to the demand and the need to live up to a better future for our members of the Church and their families, this association was established at the beginning of 2006. They meet every third Sunday of the month, after the Mass in the community room. Most of the sessions start after 3:00 pm and last about two hours.
It is the desire of parents to learn the German language, to deal with their children and the various school administrations and authorities, as well as to improve their job search and integration opportunities in society.
In the premises of the parish center on the Becherstraße 25a a German language course for adults especially women is offered here. Three times a week for 4 lessons each.
Furthermore, from Monday to Friday in the time from 13.00 to 18.30 clock in the same rooms, tutoring and care for school children, teenagers and single mothers offered. Both projects are run by Mr. Ernest Ampadu honorary.
Advice and support of parishioners
Since most of the parishioners do not speak German and have no money to seek help from lawyers and interpreters, we offer interpreters and escort services in this area. Most women and single mothers are affected by school, official and administrative matters.
More On Our Charitable Causes
Visiting The Sick
Sick members are visited at home as well as in hospitals with small gifts for encouragement. Sometimes sick members are accompanied on visits to the doctor or hospital visits if necessary.
Christmas Getogether
On Christmas Day, the church members who can afford it, including children and youth, bring small gifts to the fair. The gifts are named and placed in front of the altar and blessed during the Mass. After Mass, we all meet in the Barbarasaal, where we eat together the feast of the congregation, and distribute the gifts of music and dance by calling names. Everyone gets something special, especially in needy families and single mothers. So we show the charity among us by sharing and no one fills alone.
Easter Celebration Of The Community
After Lent, the community provides food and drink. After the Resurrection Mass on Easter Sunday, the congregation meets in the Barbarasaal. There, members eat, drink, dance and enjoy themselves together in celebration of the resurrection. So nobody gets in the loneliness.
Groups Of Men & Women
There are men’s and women’s groups in the community. They meet once a month and strengthened in the meantime by various supports. Money, articles of clothing or materials of the household and everyday life are collected and passed on to the needy. The members advice themselves on issues concerning their family lives.
Thanksgiving & Charitable Work In Ghana
On the last Sunday of October, every year there is a fundraiser for Thanksgiving. The parishioners bring things to the fair. The fair usually takes place in the Barbarasaal. There the things are auctioned off after the fair and donated the money for charitable purposes in Ghana. The donations go mostly to seminaries, children’s villages, hospitals and other charities. Part of the money is also on activities for the youth and children and other community activities.
Anniversary Celebration
For instance, in November 2011, our community reached its ten years existence. To prepare better, the anniversary celebration was postponed to April 29, 2012. For this occasion the community invited many Ghanaian communities in Europe. Cardinal Turkson, who works in the Vatican, was also invited to celebrate with us. The celebration was very successful.
Liturgy Of Mass, Pilgrimages & Priest Visits
Our fair takes place on Sundays between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm in the Trinity Church. The Mass is bilingual (English and Twi) by our Ghanaian pastor Matthew Owusu-Manu. A community choir supported by the community band accompanies the mass. The process is similar to that of the German Mass, except that the songs and songs are accompanied by drums, drums and keyboards.
Friday evenings and high festivities in the week also a fair takes place, usually at 19.00 clock in the Trinity Church. During Lent, the Way of the Cross is celebrated every Friday in the church. Also in the month of October, rosary prayer takes place on Friday evenings before the fair. On the last Saturday of October, the community makes a pilgrimage to Neviges to conclude the month with a rosary prayer.
At least once a year, the congregation travels to Holland to visit the SMA pastors in Cadier en Keer to celebrate Mass together with the priests. Most of the priests there have been working in Ghana for many years and have spent nearly half of their lives there. They have brought to life many churches, hospitals, schools and other projects in Ghana. Many of our parishioners were even baptized, confirmed or donated the first communions by some of the old priests who spend their pensions in Holland. They even know each other by name. Many of the priests there still have Ghanaian names. After the fairs we show our culture through diverse Ghanaian food, music, dances and fashion show. This encounter reminds the priests of their good old days and experiences in Ghana.
